World countries thought it was not practical to reduce the number of electrical and electronic devices. Rather, they thought the power consumed by these devices could be brought down. The result is energy savers and energy saving techniques. Energy saving technology refers to the method of reducing power consumption by devices and inventing new devices which consume less power. In India, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BII) governs the star rating method in order to encourage power consumption. The Bureau encourages the general public to use devices with high star rating and urges manufacturers to invent such devices.
There are two purposes served. One is power is saved and the other is consumers spend less. You can find star rating on Air conditioners, refrigerators and lights. The rating is between a single star and 5 stars. Higher the number of red stars you find on a device, more is the energy efficiency. The BII sticks a label on the devices which carries the amount of energy the devices consume. A device with high star rating will cost you more and save more energy too. The premium price you spend for the device can be recovered in a few months by the energy efficiency it offers.
